Cesarean Section

I was able to stand in on a C-Section yesterday at work....well, not at my work, but at the hospital. I went over with our P.A., she assisted the Dr, and i stood at the foot of the bed, on some step stools so i could get a good look! MAN! it was cool! He did it "Classical" which is where the incision goes up and down, instead of right to left. so this image isn't totally correct, because it shows the lower right to left incision...

But the patient had a scar that she wanted revised, and it went up and down. So he cut the scar out first, and then used the Bovie (cauterizing cutting machine) to cut down through the fatty layers, then got down through the facia. Now down to her uterus, he very carefully cut into it, so the membranes were exposed. They break the water then, and he reached in, and grabbed the babies legs! Baby came out feet first, and then Angela his assistant had to kind of push (like that picture talks about) and get the head out. Once the baby is born, they suction all fluid and what little blood there is out of the abdomen... the uterus is out of the body, and sitting on her belly at this point... then the stitching begins....and that is a process! They have to use 3 layers of stitches in the uterus. Because the uterus is so thick after contractions and stuff.... Anyway, then i think they had to stitch up the facia, then 2 or 3 more layers for the rest of the skin.... incredible. But the really gross part.... if the patient throws up during a c-section...the muscles push their internal organs out of the incision.... CRAZY!! It was amazing....

And here is a dog being prepped for a c section! HAHA!!

This is the kind of stuff i will miss about working for my Dr.... I seriously think he is a fab doc, and will go to him for the rest of my life as long as he is here! : ) He makes the right call. Sometimes it is hard to trust that your Doc did that but he does. And i have had a fantastic experience working with him. He is GREAT! : )
